How to Know If You Have Cataract

CalendarOct. 15, 2025

Cataract occurs when the clear lens of the eye becomes clouded, leading to blurred vision. While age is a primary factor, several other elements can contribute to the development of cataracts at an earlier stage.

It can seriously affect your eyesight and, if untreated, may even lead to blindness. That's why it's important to notice the early signs and visit an eye doctor in time.

Early Signs of Cataract

Some common signs include sudden blurry vision, eye pain or redness, dark spots ("floaters") in your view, glare, and strong sensitivity to light. For example, headlights may seem too bright when driving at night. Colors may also look different to you. White objects might appear brownish or yellowish.

Cataracts usually appear with age, most often after the age of 50-60. If there's a strong family history, your risk of developing cataracts may be significantly higher. That part aside, almost everyone over 80 develops cataracts regardless of genetics.

However, some factors can cause cataract earlier in life. These include things such as diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking, stress, injuries, and even the use of some medications.

When to See an Eye Doctor

The simple answer is if you notice any of the symptoms mentioned above, or if you are over 50 years old.

It's important to note that special eye drops do not help slow down the lens clouding, and they are not a complete cure for cataracts.

The only effective method of treating cataracts is replacing the cloudy lens with an artificial one. After the surgery, vision is restored, and the new lens stays clear for life. If there are no complications, the surgery is painless and takes only 10-15 minutes. Doctors use local anesthetic drops, so you can stay awake but feel no pain.

To prevent cataracts, schedule an annual visit with your ophthalmologist. By doing so, you can protect your eyesight.
